The Why and How

When I was traveling and living off savings, I ended up with a mess of spreadsheets trying to forecast my spending in different currencies, attempting to predict the state of my savings in future. This became really difficult to maintain and never showed me all the data I really wanted.

So I created FutureMoney as a web app to handle all of this with ease, with supporting 100+ different currencies at the core of the solution too. Now I just log in on any device, update my bank balances, update and add some transactions, maybe add expected costs of a holiday I'm thinking of. Then easily view how my savings will be impacted over time.

How it works

  1. Build a Scenario

    1. Create a Scenario

A Scenario is one complete picture of your finances. Most people need only one to begin with; the second comes later, when you may want to work out how an expensive holiday or set of purchases may impact your cashflow..

    2. Add Accounts

This is somewhere you money sits, such as: a bank account, a wallet or anywhere you store money / wealth. Each one takes an opening balance, the date that balance was true, and the currency it is held in. Everything here is manually inputted by you, theres no external connections to banks.

    3. Setup transactions for each account

A Transaction is money going in or out of an account, these come in the forms of one-off or reoccurring. With each transaction you must set the value, currency, date (with an optional end date for reoccurring transactions) and frequency for reoccurring transactions.

    4. Group up any transactions together

Transactions can be related, therefore you may want to add another forecast view for these transactions. Therefore you can group these transactions together by adding a group and selecting the transactions in a group. A transaction can only be in 1 group at once.

  2. Read the Forecast

    1. Choose forecasting options

Chose the currency to forecast in, along with time span for how far ahead to look and breakdown for how often to calculate balances.

    2. View charts

View your cashflow visually over time through graphs. There will always be an overall graph, along with a per account graph. For each account you can have an overall view, or break it down by group.

    3. View grids

View your cashflow through tables, getting all the juicy details, including breakdowns of the transactions which hit. There will always be an overall table and then a table per account.

  3. Coming back later

    1. Answer the nudges

When a recurring payment has run its course or an opening balance has aged, the app says so and offers the obvious fix, rather than quietly forecasting from figures that stopped being true.

    2. Know where it lives

If you did not sign in when you used it, all the data was saved locally in your browser, so this scenario wont be accessible from another device of yours either. If you signed in, you'll be able to reach the same scenarios from any device.

Questions

  • Does it connect to my bank?

No, and it never will. There is no bank integration. Every figure in the app is one you typed.

  • Do I have to make an account?

No. Run it locally and everything stays in your browser's own storage with no private details leaving your machine. Signing in is only useful if you want to reach the same scenarios from more than one device.

  • What happens to my local data if I sign in?

Nothing. The two modes are kept deliberately apart and never mix, so what is on the device stays on the device, untouched, and signing out leaves it exactly as it was. However local data can not be transferred to your account.

  • Can it handle more than one currency?

Yes, and that was built in from the start rather than bolted on. Accounts, individual transactions and the display totals can all be in different currencies, with exchange rates pulled live.

  • What do you do with my data?

Absolutely nothing. If you log in, the data for your account will be stored on a server and only ever touched by you.

  • Does it cost anything?

No. It is free, with no paid tier and nothing held back.
